Hi, Welcome to Living and Working in Korea.
I'm Ryan, M, Korean CPA.
If you are planning a trip to Korea in 2026, you’ve probably heard of the KTX (Korea Train Express). It’s famous, it’s fast, and... it’s usually sold out.
SRT Train in Korea: The Fast Alternative to KTX Explained
But here is the insider secret most tourists miss: The SRT (Super Rapid Train).
Think of SRT as KTX’s younger, cooler, slightly cheaper sibling. It departs from Gangnam (Suseo Station) instead of Seoul Station, and the seats are actually wider (a huge plus if you’re tall like me).
I take this train down to Busan all the time. If u stay in Gangnam or southern part of seoul, use SRT. It is more cheaper than KTX, and even broader than KTX.
SRT Homepage link are as follows.
Here is my "No-Stress Guide" to riding the SRT like a local.
🎟️ Buying Tickets (Without the Headache)
You have a few options, but let me save you some time: Do not wait until you get to the station. Weekends sell out fast.
The "Easy App" Way: Download the SRT App (search "SRT - Super Rapid Train"). It has an English setting. You can pick your seat, pay with a foreign Visa/Mastercard, and the ticket pops up on your phone. No printing needed.
The Website: Go to etk.srail.kr. It works, but the app is smoother.
In Person: If you are a spontaneous traveler, just walk up to a kiosk at Suseo Station. Look for the "English" button. It takes 2 minutes.
💰 Price Check (Seoul ↔ Busan):-> Price is vary from time
- Economy: ~$40 USD (approx. 52,000 KRW)
- First Class: ~$58 USD (approx. 75,000 KRW).
- My take: Economy is perfectly fine. The legroom is surprisingly good.
🗺️ Where Does It Go?
The main line is Suseo (Seoul) ➡️ Busan.
Time: It takes about 2 hours and 10 - 50 minutes. That’s faster than driving (5+ hours) and way less hassle than flying.
Other Stops: It also goes to Daegu (textile city), Gyeongju (ancient history), and Mokpo (amazing seafood in the southwest).
⚠️ Important: SRT departs from Suseo Station, NOT Seoul Station.
Suseo is in Gangnam, right on Subway Line 3 (Orange Line). Don't go to the wrong station!
⏰ Is It On Time?
Korean trains are scary punctual.
If your ticket says it leaves at 10:00 AM, the doors close at 9:59 AM and it moves at 10:00:00.
Do not be "fashionably late." You will be waving goodbye to the train from the platform.
🤫 Train Etiquette (Don't Be "That Guy")
Korean trains are library-quiet. Here is how to blend in:
The "Whisper Rule": People sleep or work. If you need to take a call, run to the vestibule (the space between cars).
Eating: You can eat (I usually grab a tuna kimbap at the station), but avoid smelly foods. No stinky tofu or strong burgers, please.
Wi-Fi: Yes, there’s free, fast Wi-Fi. Just connect to "SRT_WiFi."
📸 5 Shots for Your Camera Roll
If you’re blogging your trip, here are the shots you need:
- The "Start Line": A selfie with the purple SRT sign at Suseo Station.
- The Train Nose: The sleek, bullet-shaped front of the train on the platform. It looks futuristic.
- The "Legroom Flex": A POV shot of your legs stretched out in Economy class. (Show people it’s comfy!)
- Snack Time: A photo of your train snacks (banana milk + boiled eggs is the classic Korean combo).
- Arrival: The view of the ocean as you pull into Busan Station.
Final Tip:
If you can’t find tickets on KTX, check SRT. It’s my secret weapon for getting around Korea. Have an awesome trip! 🚄💨
